Magical girls, also known as mahou shoujo, are just that - girls with fantastic powers. These new powers offer a wide range of possibilities, but also complicate their lives in an equal number of ways. Some may fall into the category of cute witch, where magic becomes a mundane part of everyday life. Others use their magic for more personal goals and benefits. And then some of the most famous use their powers as warriors. However they gain and use their powers, this genre often contains golden combinations of effeminate badassery.
Because who says you can't kick ass while wearing frills?
Expect many to contain elements like cute mascots who serve as guides or mentors, cute wands, fun and often girly clothes, the ability to transform appearance into their iconic alter ego, and magic trinkets, though it varies. This also contains a few series that can only be described as "magical boy".
